Our Philosophy
‘Food as Medicine’: is a common refrain in the functional nutrition space. While not medicine, food can be an incredibly powerful agent for change in our health, both short and long term. Ideally, we’re using a proper diet and balanced lifestyle to prevent us from needing medicine (medication/medical intervention), but sometimes there’s a time and place for it. The idea that food should be your only medicine insinuates that you’re ‘doing health wrong’ if you need medicine as well. Finally, food is more than medicine - it has an incredible capacity to be so many things! It’s connecting over large meals with family and friends, mindless therapy as you follow a recipe, showing love for your people, comforting, nourishing and yes, healing yourself and others.
Weight is not the goal. Food should enhance your life, it shouldn't be your life. Part of this work includes changing your mindset around body size and weight-centric wellness goals. We use use elimination diets and nutrition protocols from a strictly therapeutic lens. They are designed to be short term, so you can better understand what works for you and get back to living your life! We know how detrimental the restriction mindset can be, not only to our relationship with food, but our health overall. Our perspective is something closer to ‘all foods fit, but maybe not all foods fit you”, and really focusing on eating enough so that you’re well fueled and satisfied. This has been a pivotal shift in our relationship to food, body, and health and we want to help you find the right balance as well.
Mindset, and particularly self-compassion might feel like 'woo-woo', but it's an important part of any health routine. Thoughts of gratitude and self-compassion release different hormones than stress and angst. These hormones and neurotransmitters permeate through your nervous, endocrine, immune, digestive, and cardiovascular system and can have substantial effects on your health. Your mindset steers the ship!
Accessibility is an essential and often overlooked piece of the modern 'wellness' world. We believe everyone should have the knowledge and tools to improve their health. It should be more affordable to feed yourself well and move your body regularly, than adhere to reactive prescriptions and procedures, but that’s not always how it’s conveyed. In an effort to meet our clients where they are, (1) we work to provide our clients with recommendations that are accessible, (2) we offer a group program at a lower cost than working 1:1, (3) and we would welcome a conversation on making this work more accessible to you.
